Intro to Sewing Garments


This 8 week beginner class will show you how to use your own measurements to create a perfectly fitting pencil skirt pattern. This is a beginner class – you do not need to have previous sewing experience to take it.

Starting Sunday April 22nd, 2pm – 4pm (FULL)
Starting Thursday April 26th, 6pm – 8pm
Starting Wednesday May 30th, 2pm – 4pm
Starting Wednesday May 30th, 6pm – 8pm
Starting Sunday June 17th, 2pm – 4pm
Starting Thursday June 28th, 6pm – 8pm

This class is 8 weeks long and each class is 2hrs.
Course fee is $250~

Class Outline: (8 weeks/2hrs each week)

Class One:
Sewing tools and tips review
Identifying fabrics and weaves
Identifying different types of fusing
Threading a machine
Determining the grain of a fabric and cutting on the grain
Using notches
Sewing a zigzag stitch at a wide and a narrow stitch width
Taking your own measurements
Realigning the grain of your fabric

Class Two:
Creating a fit sample from your own body
Using the T-square
Conducting a fitting
Transferring measurements onto paper
True your pattern

Class Three:
Drafting darts
Using the French Curve
Adding seam allowance
Creating notches
Adding pockets if desired

Class Four:
Cutting fabric correctly
Sewing darts
Proper pressing equipment

Class Five:
Using the serger
Inserting an invisible zipper

Class Six:
Sewing in pockets
Sewing side seams
Fitting the skirt!

Class Seven:
Hemming the skirt and lining by hand or machine
Fusing the waistband or facing
Sewing in the waistband or facing

Class Eight:
Sausaging the waistband and crack stitching
Sewing buttonholes and sewing on buttons

This class runs for 8 weeks. Each class is 2 hrs. Current and former students are always invited to use our open studio time from 6-9pm on Friday evenings in addition to their regular class time. (Email to reserve a machine at least 24hrs in advance. Space is limited) Course fee is $250~.
