For this class, you will be using a commercial pattern to create a dress or other garment of your choice. Our basic dress blocks can also be altered to create just about any style that you’d like to make! Some great places to shop for patterns online include:

Materials: Muslin will be provided for fit samples. You will need to purchase / bring all required fabrics and notions for your project with you to class, or purchase on our Textiles Tour of Queen St. W.
Techniques: (may vary on a project by project basis) Altering patterns, using fit samples, identifying satin, twill and plain weave fabrics, using a serger and sewing using a pattern.  Sewing facings, darts, sleeves, collars, inserting zippers and making buttonholes as patterns require.

Day 1: Sew up Your Fit Sample and Alter your Pattern!

Make sure your pattern fits you perfectly with a simple fit muslin first. Don’t be afraid of altering, shortening and redesigning your patterns – with a fit muslin, you can catch fit problems in advance and see how a garment will fit you ahead of time!

Day 2: Textiles Tour of Queen St. (morning) and Cutting Your Fabric!

Get a guided tour of the garment district – check out the best places to buy ribbon, belts, buckles, hardware and even leather! Learn how a different weave makes a fabric more or less suitable for a garment, how to care for various types of fabric and more!
Students can purchase fabric for their garment during our tour. Fabric will be steamed/washed as needed and then cut in the afternoon.

Day 3, 4 & 5: Sewing and Serging Your Garment

Learn how to use the serger to professionally finish your garment edges and then start sewing up your garment!  Learn to add facings, zippers, sleeves and buttons as your pattern requires.

***Camp registration fees are non-refundable. If you need to cancel you class, you can use your credit towards a different class date or towards materials from our retail space. There is a $35~ fee for classes cancelled or changed with less than 7 days notice from your registered start date.
