Ready to try a new sewing pattern and need some help? Sewing with Commercial Patterns is for you! Use a commercial pattern to make a skirt, dress, shirt or other intermediate level sewing project with the help of one of our instructors. If you’d like to expand your drafting skills, you can use your skirt blocks from ‘Intro to Sewing Garments‘ to try making a trumpet, circle, pleated or peplum skirts, or a skirt with gores, yokes or pockets!
For this class, you will be using a commercial pattern to create a garment of your choice. You will learn how to make a muslin fit sample and how to make pattern adjustments to your pattern to make it custom fit, just for you.
You will need to purchase / bring all required fabrics and notions for your project with you to class. Muslin is all that is required for your very first class and is available for purchase at the studio. If you are unsure of what fabrics are appropriate you can discuss this with you instructor during your first class.
If you want to tackle a more difficult project, such as a lined jacket, you can do so in this class although you will likely need to register for 2 sessions and be prepared to do some sewing at home to complete it.
This class is 8 weeks long and each class is 2hrs. There is a maximum of 4 students in each class.
Course fee is $325 + HST
We recommend purchasing your pattern from one of the companies below. We find these patterns have a great fit and easy to follow instructions with great illustrations. This will make your sewing experience much more enjoyable.
Some great places to shop for patterns online include:
- Colette Patterns
- Victory Patterns
- Grainline Studios
- Tilly and the Button
- Thread Theory
- Oliver+S (childrens patterns)
*** We strongly recommend NOT using Burda patterns as the instructions can be hard to follow and we have found multiple pattern errors in the past.
Note: Make sure to look for difficulty levels when shopping for a pattern (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced), and choose a pattern that’s within your skill level! Commercial patterns will include a list of required fabrics and notions for the project.
***We can not guarantee that all projects will be completed in 8 weeks, as each project is different. You can book additional class time to finish projects with our Continuing Projects sessions held Tuesday nights at 6pm.
***Class registration fees are non-refundable. If you need to cancel you class, you can use your credit towards a different class date or towards materials from our retail space. There is a $35~ fee for classes cancelled or changed with less than 7 days notice from your registered start date.
